Predating the 1996 Prague project by a year, Statue Cocoons illustrates Karam’s original project conception of installing his Archaic Procession sculptures on the Charles Bridge amongst the existing baroque statues. The architectural plans and sections of the Charles Bridge take up the majority of this longitudinal painting, and between them, wrapped in cocoons, the baroque sculptures float in linear formation. The bridge and cocoon-sculptures are surrounded with black, as though the scene is in hibernation. The Archaic Procession elements cross the “skyline” of the painting, standing outside the dark area like detached observers, or actors waiting in the wings.
